From the Coalition to End Money Bond:
“Every year, Illinois incarcerates over 250,000 people who are awaiting trial. None of these people have been convicted of a crime and most are jailed simply because they can’t afford to pay a money bond. Pretrial incarceration is hurting communities across our state.
The time to end money bond is now! Groups across Illinois are working together as part of the Illinois Network for Pretrial Justice with the goal of ending wealth-based pretrial incarceration and protecting the rights of everyone. Register now to join us on Thursday, August 20th from
6-7:30pm CDT for a teach-in about the Pretrial Fairness Act and how you can make this vision a reality!

“Celebrate the Centennial of Women’s Suffrage” Wednesday, August 26, 7 PM
with a performance by featured famed feminist folksinger Kristin Lems.
“Gaining the right to vote was a milestone in the liberation of women from centuries of inferior and subservient status, and the culmination of a long and massive struggle. Let’s come together to celebrate our foremothers, and carry on their work.
Kristin Lems, one of our foremost feminist leaders, was on the front line of the battle to pass the Equal Rights Amendment in the 1970s and 80s, and her song, “Ballad of the ERA.” was the movement’s unofficial anthem. New Yorker magazine called Kristin “a charmer in the most literal and least artifiicial sense of the word,” and Gloria Steinem called her “a one-woman argument against the notion that the women’s movement has no sense of humor.”

“Inequities in Health Care”
featuring Margie Schaps, Executive Director of the Health & Medicine Policy Research Group
Wednesday, September 16th 7-8:30 PM
Our chapter’s September meeting will feature Margie Schaps, executive director of the Health & Medicine Policy Research Group (hmprg.org), speaking on Inequities in Health Care.
The tragic inequality in health care in our country — with so many without medical insurance, unable to go the doctor and/or being bankrupted by medical bills — is a feminist issue. Women are disproportionately affected by this immoral and evil state of affairs — especially women of color. Margie will discuss HMPRG’s history, the work it does, and how health care must become a human right. Frankly, the status quo is both misogynist and racist.
