Missing & Murdered Indigenous Women Awareness Day 2026
May 5

MMIW Day, or Missing & Murdered Indigenous Women (and Relatives) Day, is observed annually on May 5th to raise awareness about the crisis of missing and murdered Indigenous people in the U.S. and Canada, with people wearing red and holding events to honor victims, demand action, and advocate for justice for stolen relatives, addressing systemic issues like jurisdictional gaps and violence against Native communities.
Indigenous women and relatives face disproportionately high rates of violence, sexual assault, and human trafficking, often due to jurisdictional complexities between tribal, state, and federal authorities, and systemic issues like racism and discrimination. MMIW Day challenges the silence and inaction surrounding these crimes.
